Got a call from Lizzy last night, so that probably made my evening (distracted me from the section on electron affinity for awhile too!). She got a TA spot, so probably there will be the mutual bitching and moaning of how fucking lazy and stupid the students are in MI and WA. She said something about how her students couldn't do math. Wow. I strongly suspect some of my students couldn't do math either, based on some of the work that was shown. The ones who didn't show work, I think they just tried pulling answers out of their asses or something. I can understand that more than someone who doesn't know how to find the area of a rectangle.
My thermo class is apparently being held via a website that is currently down due to the prof being in Florida this week. Wonderful. I wish they'd fix the website, I'm already 2 chapters ahead in inorganic, I'd like to start reading some thermo before I start teaching. (Doubtless I will want to change my work ethic concerning thermo very soon. I remember Roberta's feelings about thermo when we lived together-hell, I saw the work. That looked like some scary shit....)
I bought Season 2 of Sex and the City the other day. After having finished that one, I now really want Season 3...this could be bad for my bank account. Speaking of which, I need to find another bank, since Charter One is making me want to throw knives at them. They called me up for a phone survey awhile back, and were surprised when I told them that I was switching banks because their service blows. I keep getting charged $25 a month because I apparently am not spending enough money out of my account or some B.S. I can't use their website, it keeps telling me that I don't have the right type of account to have an online account. I think someone gave me a card to call tech service on that one, but when I'm on a computer, I don't have cell phone service to call them, because I'm deep in some evil university building.
I got hit on by a really poor person (don't know if they were homeless) while waiting for the bus this morning. Wow, how I just ADORE getting hit on by....well, anyone, except Lora. ;) For some REAL creativity, the guy offered me some change and said he would like to pay for my ride home. I told him I had a bus pass (more or less true), so it wasn't necessary. So all things considered, I've definitely been hit on by ruder, creepier people, but they usually don't look older than my father....
Speaking of THAT, my dad fell down the stairs pretty shortly after Christmas, and bent his tailbone. He's not too happy about this. He can't sit down or sleep comfortably.
Since I now have some obervers of LJ who do not themselves have LJ accounts, I'm giving some thought to re-enabling anonymous comments. If I get jerks who say rude shit under the guise of anonymity again, that'll end. Or I'll just blame chemical engineers. :p
I should probably go hunt down Mariana, she said something about having some of the assignments downloaded before the site crashed for thermo...

Date: 2006-01-12 09:06 am (UTC)Lasalle Bank has been treating me alright. I do have one of those interest-bearing checking accounts that requires a minimum balance to avoid service fees, but I stay above it and all is good. Plus I'm pretty sure any account can be accessed online. My whole family's with them and we've never gotten fees, even my siblings with their simple savings accounts. Anyway, it's a bank that's only in northern Indiana and the lower peninsula of Michigan, so that's a drawback to consider.
Just another week or two before I can start sharing my stupid lab student stories! That is, the students are stupid, not-so-much the stories. Well, we'll see, I suppose!

Date: 2006-01-12 09:40 am (UTC)I used to have an account at Standard Federal, now Lasalle, and I was thinking of opening another savings account there. I ended up going below my minimum balance while at Tech, and also, since they were so damn far away....it was a pain. I wish Wells Fargo was down here, I LOVED that bank. They were in Anaheim, in Denver....why the hell not Southern Michigan?
I start teaching again next week. I suppose I should be grateful as hell it's not gen chem 1 again. I'm hoping for more than 4 students with work ethics this time around.

Date: 2006-01-12 10:16 am (UTC)And yeah, it was a pain not having Standard Federal up in the U.P. I used to gripe about their commercials touting their number of branches in Michigan, chiming in with "but none in the U.P.!" every time they mentioned the figure.
So for your TA job this semester, are you teaching that class, or doing recitations, or grading, or what? Ah, the various possibilities of tasks our professors can force us to do! :p
this might be funny...or long
Date: 2006-01-12 11:21 am (UTC)My previous advice still stands-don't go teach a class while armed. The temptation to shoot a student, the whole class, or possibly yourself, is just too damn high.
The anonymous poster should have found an off-campus computer to use. I probably wouldn't have figured that one out.

Date: 2006-01-13 08:37 am (UTC)The nearest one to me is in Portage. After that, ummm, probably Lansing.
